Lena: ...Gabrielle? Has something happened? Is -- is everyone all right?
Gabrielle: Silly! Of course! What, I can't come around for myself?
Lena: Ah, well, I hadn't seen Murdoch around for a week or so. I just... wondered, was all.
Gabrielle: You mean worried. You're as bad as he is! I don't know how you people live, thinkin' bout the bad could happen all the time! But no. I came round 'cause I heard you have a little problem with a Masquerade dress.
Lena: Wha -- oh, no! Look, I was just... angry, that day, it's sorted, I'll just wear synth --
Gabrielle: You can't wear synth to an Uptown party, you silly thing. It's off the rack, an' I had to guess your size, but I reckon you'll pass.
Lena: Gabie --
Gabrielle: You gotta try it on at least, or you'll hurt my feelings. I worked hard to get it. Though I gotta say, I'm workin' the Uptown stores more often from now on. Their security is pitiful.
Lena: Gabie, honey, I didn't ask where or how for a reason.

Synth: a synthetic fabric, cheap but flimsy -- it won't last more than a day or two under the best conditions, and melts quickly in the face of adversity (like, say, a small shower of rain.) It's popular in space habitats, where its fickle nature is less troublesome, but groundside it's used mostly as clubwear by those who can't afford a different outfit every night.
We've seen Gabrielle once before. For those curious about her place in the gang, she runs a small (around six or seven people) ring of shoplifters and pickpockets, fencing her goods through Murdoch. She's also one of Alain's common-law wives, and as such trusted with money and people, though she's rarely involved in the wider politics or gang wars.
